Hearing double: can you identify the homophones?

Reading, Writing, Research Posted on December 19, 2018 by David GuionApril 29, 2019
mistakes with homonyms--fun with homonyms

Hector bawled when he went bald. Sara threw a shoe through the window to shoo a rabbit from her garden. Pirates seize cargo on the high seas. Welcome to the wacky world of homophones. Homophones are two or three words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. They are a type of homonym. I have had fun over the years pointing out when writers have chosen the wrong word of such a pear pair in my occasional series Misused Pears. I no longer read the emails or visit the websites that provided the best howlers. And so, I haven’t come across enough new ones lately for another post. I know no better alternative than a quiz. Most of following prompts suggest a two-word answer, a pair of homophones. There’s one threefer.

Contronyms: words with opposite meanings The English language has lots of nyms. Synonyms mean the same thing. Homonyms sound the same but aren’t. Like pair and pear. I have a series called Misused Pears to enjoy peoples’ struggle to pick the right word. Antonyms mean the opposite. And contronyms are their own antonym. Sometime after I knew what a meat cleaver was, I learned that the Bible says Adam cleaved to his wife. So cleave means both to separate and to cling.

Dictionary game words from A to Z

Reading, Writing, Research Posted on April 4, 2018 by David GuionMarch 31, 2018 4

Have you ever played the dictionary game? It’s a great party game for a group of people with a reasonably good vocabulary. All it takes is pencils and paper for everyone and a dictionary. Designate one person as the chooser. The chooser finds an odd word and announces it. If anyone in the room knows what it means, it is disqualified. Once the chooser has announced a word no one knows, he or she spells it and gives the part of speech.

Fun, oddball words about lovers of words and books

Reading, Writing, Research Posted on November 29, 2017 by David GuionDecember 16, 2017

Quockerwodger. There. Now that I’ve scared off everyone who doesn’t have fun with wacky words, we can share some unusual words about word lovers and book lovers. Two words describe lovers of words: logophile and lexophile The logophile is likely to read and reread favorite passages of a novel over and over just for the sheer love of the words in it. A lexophile especially loves anagrams, palindromes, puns, and other word play. “Lexis” and “logos” are closely related Greek words that can mean “word,” among other things. They both form other, less well-known compounds.
