A new President and the End of Term Web Archive

Reading, Writing, Research Posted on December 21, 2016 by David GuionJanuary 7, 2017

Preservation of online information presents a very difficult problem in general. Federal government websites are especially vulnerable at the end of a presidential term. The End of Term Web Archive has preserved a snapshot of them since 2008. I have seen web posts that speak of a frantic effort to preserve government information. They attribute it to fear of the incoming Trump administration. Don’t believe such mindless hysteria. Regardless of who won the election, the End of Term Web Archive team would be hard at work. Even when a President is reelected, turnover in the cabinet and at other agencies can be high. The new team often takes down the old sites to make room for its own. If a government document exists in print, some archive preserves it. The National Archives or a presidential library preserve a lot. Government information that exists only on the web easily disappears without a trace. Just like any other web-based information.

It’s election season. Want to get away? The federal government can help. Really! Government websites offer a great deal of travel information. They won’t book your flight or find a hotel, but some of them can suggest great travel locations. They’ll give you safety tips and help you decide what to do if something goes wrong. Recalls: Government websites you should know

Reading, Writing, Research Posted on December 23, 2015 by David GuionJune 7, 2016

It seems like the news constantly brings word of new recalls. Sometimes it’s cars. Sometimes it’s food. Sometimes it’s toys. There seems to be no limit to what can get recalled. What are we supposed to do, besides wait for the random news story, to keep up with them all? Six government agencies have collaborated on a site for you to find information, report dangerous products, or just find safety tips. It’s called, logically enough, www.Recalls.gov.

What Everyone Ought to Know about Disasters: FEMA Website

Reading, Writing, Research Posted on July 1, 2015 by David GuionJune 27, 2015
FEMA relief effort

You don’t want to deal with FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It’s not because it’s a federal bureaucracy, which is bad enough. It’s because the only time they come to town is when you’ve suffered a catastrophe: severe weather, wildfires, earthquakes, or various manmade disasters like chemical spills. You don’t want to deal with them. But it’s a good idea to look at the FEMA website. The home page is simple and attractive. The site itself is many layers deep and may require some hunting to find exactly what you need to know. It contains information not only for you, the property owner, but also for insurance professionals and other people in other important roles. The screen shots below (captured June 23, 2015) show what’s in the menus at the top of the home page, and then what you find when you scroll down to the next part of the page.

Government websites: National Park Service

Yellowstone national park service

This installment of the occasional series on federal government websites looks at the National Park Service. Travel season will be here before we know it, and the national parks make wonderful vacation destinations. Nearly everyone knows parks like Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon, but the National Park Service operates 407 national parks, national monuments, and other properties. Click on “Find a Park” in the header menu to find parks by name, location, activity, and topic. Here are the ones that begin with the letter E. Ebey’s Landing Edgar Allen Poe Effigy Mounds Eisenhower El Camino Real de los Tejas El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro El Malpais El Morro Eleanor Roosevelt Ellis Island Erie Canalway Essex Eugene O’Neill Everglades
